How Does Novus Support Local Communities?

We believe it is important to support the communities where we live, serve and do business. Part of our support is centered on our involvement in the arts community and culture as well as improving the quality of life wherever we are. As a company, we donate funds to support social, cultural and community causes together with our employees, who also donate significant sums from their own pockets, which are matched by Novus. We feel it is important to maintain a personal presence and get involved – meeting, talking, helping, and advancing what’s important to those around us. We encourage the volunteering spirit within our employee team and forge deep- reaching partnerships within our communities.

Helping the Sacred Elephant

In June, 2012, Novus Thailand’s Green Team sponsored an employee visit and partner project with Kasetsart University’s wildlife veterinary group and Elephant’s World in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. During their two day visit, employees had the opportunity to test methods of feeding Novus mineral supplements to elephants, learn about elephant conservation and ride and bathe elephants in the river. Baseline mineral nutrition of the elephants and effects of the supplement are being further examined through blood samples taken by veterinary collaborators. Such activities contribute to formal and informal education programs and add to conservation support of an endangered species and symbol of the country. The ongoing project includes collaboration with the elephant sanctuary and Kasetsart University’s wildlife veterinary group to further contribute to knowledge on elephant health and nutrition in Thailand.

Partnering with Cargill Cares in Vietnam

In July 2012, Novus Vietnam participated as one of the top five donors in an event sponsored by local customer, Cargill Vietnam, as part of their charity outreach organization Cargill Cares. More than 200 private companies participated in the event, held at a fun park near Ho Chi Minh City, which raised around $180,000 for use by the Vietnamese government for building schools in rural communities. Overall, the Cargill Cares fund has helped construct over 56 schools in Vietnam, aided people in flooded areas, provided scholarships to poor students and contributed rehabilitation equipment to local disadvantaged children.

Supporting Education in Thailand

The Saitarn Foundation is a charitable organization of the Betagro Group, a leader in Thailand’s agri-industry, feed and food businesses. Their main objective is to promote education and provide scholarship support to needy students in rural Thailand. The Saitarn Foundation has assisted with financial aid and academic opportunities for more than 300 students since its inception in 1996. In October 2012, Novus Thailand partnered with the Saitarn Foundation by participating in a Saitarn student camp in Lopburi, Thailand. The camp was targeted to train students in economic principles. Our team taught the students aspects of health and the nutritional and economic benefits of eggs.

In December 2012, Novus again partnered with the Saitarn Foundation to organize an English language workshop for students in primary school. The workshop encouraged the students to practice English communication skills and helped them to become more confident and comfortable using English in their daily life.

Supporting Our Communities in the U.S.

Funding for Community Causes
During 2012, we donated $705,000 for community causes in the U.S. Fifty percent of this sum was provided by employees and Novus matched the amounts to reach the total. This is more than 10 percent greater than our donations in 2011. The prime recipients were United Way and the Arts and Education Council (AEC), with many other causes receiving our assistance. In addition, hundreds of Novus employees again volunteered their time this year in community support. Most of our efforts focus on supporting awareness for sustainable agriculture, food security, arts and culture and solidarity with our communities in times of need.

Arts & Education Council
Novus is a long-time supporter of the AEC. Employees increased their giving to the 2012 AEC Annual Giving Campaign, and with the Novus Matching Gift Program, donated over $12,000 to the Council. At the conclusion of the campaign, over 400 guests from the community joined us at our headquarters for the fourth annual Novus Art Walk, where they enjoyed food, drinks, live music, performances and artwork presented by over 30 local artists and arts organizations.

Second Annual “Run for the Farms” Katy Trail 5K
Novus was proud to host and co-sponsor the second annual Run for the Farms 5K at our headquarters in June 2012. The run attracted over 150 runners of all ages, with proceeds benefitting The Katy Land Trust.

The Katy Land Trust focuses on preserving land near the Katy Trail and is associated with the Ozark Regional Land Trust. Through private, voluntary land preservation, the Katy Land Trust helps conserve the natural, scenic and agricultural qualities of lands.

United Way and GenNext
For the past 21 years, Novus has participated in the annual United Way of Greater St. Louis Campaign to benefit United Way programs in and around the St. Louis region. This year, through generous contributions, Novus employees raised $86,000 and with the Novus Matching Gift Program, donated over $172,000 to the local community. At the conclusion of our campaign, Novus employees volunteered their time to package food at the St. Louis Area FoodBank, where the team helped package over 22,000 meals for the hungry.

In addition, Novus employees recently formed a corporate chapter for the United Way GenNext Society, which provides an opportunity for young professionals to get involved in the community while advancing their careers. Novus hosted an introductory event in November, gathering over 60 young people interested in making a contribution.

Food Drive for St. Louis Area Foodbank
This summer, we held our second annual food drive to benefit the St. Louis Area Foodbank which was a huge success. Employees contributed funds and donated food. Each dollar donated provides four meals for hungry people in the St. Louis area.

World Food Day
World Food Day is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and informed, year-round action to alleviate hunger. It is observed each October 16th in recognition of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945. Novus employees joined over 1,500 volunteers at the John Burroughs School in St. Louis for the St. Louis World Food Day 2012 on October 12th, helping to assemble almost 250,000 meals in one day.
